APC Overnight, the UK’s largest independent parcel network, has been awarded the title ‘Network of the Year’ by industry experts.
Judges at the Motor Transport Awards paid particularly close attention to the courier company’s performance during the 2012 Olympics, which saw APC Overnight liaise with its 115 depots across the country to ensure successful deliveries into London, despite mass transport restrictions. On Friday 24th May, several members of Courier Logistics staff attended the prestigious awards ceremony, Young Achievers 2013, hosted by Garnett Dickinson and the Rotherham Advertiser. We were there to support our very worthy nominees, Hannah Herrington, Matt Leng and Adam Smith who have all come to us through an apprenticeship programme and have overcome issues and gone the extra mile to become valuable members of our customer service team.

The event was held at Rotherham’s Magna Centre where we all enjoyed lively entertainment from some up and coming talented local musicians, including a girl band called Armonia, who got us all rocking with their rendition of Proud Mary. Not sure though how many of the youngsters remember that one! A two course dinner followed, washed down with several glasses of a nice white and plenty of beer too.
Also taking to the stage for the presentation ceremony was our very own Ashleigh Porter-Exley, winner of Young Apprentice 2012. Ashleigh’s co presenter for night was Tom, and they both kept the audience amused with their presentation skills, although in Ashleigh’s case there was plenty of ad-libbing!
All of the nominees were invited on stage to be presented with a goody bag and Hannah, Matt and Adam made their way up with a certain amount of trepidation at being on display to the crowd. Then came the big moment, crowning the winners! Listening to the achievements of the winners and their inspirational stories was quite emotional, but unfortunately none of our young achievers were to win their categories.
But a good night was had by all, photos to prove it, and lots of offers to buy the negatives! We all went away proud of all that our younger members of staff have achieved, they are all winners in our eyes.

With comfortable, informative facilities, and a state of the art system which allows guests to confirm appointments at the touch of a button. Our new virtual reception enables customers to collect their consignments swiftly and easily. The facility is borne as a result of lots of different ideas and brain storming sessions by various members of staff which included Ingrid’s flapping and Peter’s ‘who, what, when’ triangles. Eventually, it all finally came together and a home was made for the virtual reception.
So what you may ask exactly is the virtual reception at Courier Logistics? It is a project which quickly became Daniel’s pride and joy; in fact it is probably more intelligent than he is! Daniel searched high and low for a top of the range high tech computer with touch screen facilities which would look attractive and provide the highest level of service to both customers and visitors. Eventually, early this year, Daniel found what he was looking for which proved to be the right model for the job, a HP All in One Touch Screen PC. Once found, it wasnt going anywhere and Daniel has had his baby bolted to the reception desk!
Now that the receptionist was chosen the next step was to give her a bit of personality, again after searching high and low Daniel chose VMEasy software. VMEasy is the system which makes our receptionist intelligent. If you’ve come to visit a member of staff and have an appointment or are a temporary member of staff, the very nice receptionist will give you a badge for you to wear whilst in the depot, and if you’re lucky and the receptionist likes you she may take your picture to put on your badge. Maybe you’ve come to collect your long awaited parcel, in which case the receptionist will even alert our operations team of your presence.
It became apparent after a bit of head scratching that there was something missing from our virtual reception location and this is where the rest of the IT Department stepped in. Out of the box VMEasy wasn’t much to look at but thanks to Andy’s top notch design skills and Rachael’s negotiations, the virtual reception finally looked like she was at home. But still there was something missing! Cue an idea from our General Manager, Peter North, to install a 47
TV on the wall ready to stream information about the company and our services, with a bit of Sky News thrown in, but definitely no golf or football channels.
We are very proud of the new reception and believe this a very good example of a team effort!
The environment and the impact we can all have on it is very important to Courier Logistics. Our Customer Service Manager, Ingrid Kirkby, has recently undertaken, and passed, a course to enable the company to implement ISO14001.
Together with the nominated environmental team, work has begun to ensure Courier Logisitcs are working to the high standards required to achieve accreditation and we aim to be awarded with the standard by the end of 2013.
Courier Logistics is proud to support the Sick Children’s trust and has recently given our services to assist with the collection and delivery of office chairs donated to the trust.Click for More
The Trust offers valuable support to families at a time when they need it most, and our colleague, Richard McCluskey has recently experienced this first hand when his daughter, Alexis, was sick.
We look forward to supporting them in the future.
Along with some of my colleagues, I was recently chosen to take part in a training course to become a Courier Logistics Fire Warden.
On a serious note, the course taught me to be very aware of how to react in different fire situations and it hit home just how serious to both life and property even a small fire can be. We were taught what has now become a much easier method of identifying and using the correct extinguisher for different types of fire. Click for More
The lessons learnt can also be adapted to tackling fires in the home which is more likely situation for us to find ourselves in.
On a lighter note, it was a good team event, giving us all the opportunity to discharge a fire extinguisher to put out a controlled fire. Secretly, this has now satisfied a long held curiosity to find out how an extinguisher works, and to have a ‘go’ every time I walk past one. The trainer gave the course a good balance of serious attention and light heartedness, and we all enjoyed giving loud encouragement to our ‘Fireman’ colleagues.
I am proud to now be a fully fledged fire warden, and we have photos to prove it…do I get a badge!!!
